The Four Year Career by Richard Brooke
The 40/40/40 career plan
Most people are living according to the following formula – Work for 40 hours a week for 40 years and then retire on 40% of what was not enough in the first place!
But are there any alternatives?
Well, in the book The Four Year Career by Richard Brooke you can find one. It’s not the only alternative, it’s not ‘THE’ alternative (although in my humble opinion, it is ranked among the top 3), It’s an alternative.
So what is the 4 year career alternative?
In the book, Richard goes into a great deal of depth to explain logically (no fluff or hype, just the facts) what is network marketing and why it’s worth your time. Most of the people who get involved in network marketing do not build a business to retire on 4 years, but they can. This book shows you how you might be able to do so.
The book has two parts
In the first part, Richards walk you step by step to understand what is network marketing truly, how to treat it as a real business (vs a hobby).
The first few pages of the book (which people tend to skip) are very important. Although they don’t speak directly on network marketing, they help you build the mindset of an ‘asset builder’, an investor and an entrepreneur vs the mindset of an employee you already posses.
This way you’ll be able to understand network marketing benefits, which someone with an employee mindset cannot grasp.
The second part of the book is a collection of one-page stories of self-made millionaires in the network marketing industry. You will find there some great examples of real people from different backgrounds and with different age, which will prove you that network marketing really works! Regardless of your age, education, financial situation, country, etc.
Please note that in the latest edition (as for writing this post – the 10th anniversary edition) this part was taken off. Which is pity, in my opinion…
So if you would like a book with this part as well, you’ll need to buy one of the former editions.
You can find them in Amazon over here
Who is it for?
This is a great book for 3 types of people:
- People who are looking to learn more about network marketing
You might be skeptic about network marketing, but if you are open-minded and want to learn more about this industry from an independent resource. The four year career by Richard Brooke is for you. This book is not attached to any network marketing company, hence doesn’t have all the fluff, hype and hard selling, but rather only the facts.
. - People who are already involved in network marketing but need to understand it better
You might be a veteran network marketer or a newbie. If you don’t have the results you are wishing to, probably you don’t understand the model and what you need to do (regardless what your company is telling you to do), needless to say, explain it to others…then this book is for you. Although it is not a “motivational book” type, due to it simple explanation what is the industry and what you need to do, it will increase your belief in the network marketing as an industry and will give you a simple blueprint for your next steps in this business.
. - Use it as a prospecting tool
If you are already a network marketer who is actively prospecting for your business, the four year career book is a great prospecting tool. You can use it to handle objections or as your silent passive recruiting tool (more on that later, keep reading 🙂 ) I
Who is it not for?
- If you are looking for “motivational speaker” kind of book, this book is not for you. It is written in a style of ‘logical thinking’ aiming less for your emotions. If you are looking for a book which is more “motivational speaker” kind. I’ll suggest Richard Brooke other book: “Mach 2 with your hair on fire”
. - If you are looking for step by step task of what to do and how to do, this book is not for you. Although this book will guide you in the right direction and will help you build the right mindset and general plan of action (which are the basics before you can delve into the detailed tasks), It will not go further to give you the detailed what and how. For that, I’ll recommend you to check one of Big Al and Eric Worre books.
How to use the four year career book as a recruiting tool?
- Use it for handling objections
If someone is very vigorously opposing network marketing, don’t get into an argument with him/her. This is a lose-lose battle – either you’ll lose the argument, or if you win, they will be even more angry with you since they lost the argue…Alternatively what you can say is the following:“…I can understand now how you came to this conclusion, and it’ll be pointless trying to convince you to change your mind. But let me ask you the following 2 questions:
1. Is there a slight chance that you might be missing some crucial facts which lead you to come to a wrong conclusion (which lead you to miss a great opportunity)?
2. Are you open to check the facts, all facts, and nothing but the facts about this industry?”
Well, if he/she answers “Yes”, just hand out the book.
. - Use it as a passive/active recruiting tool
I know it is hard to believe, but although I’m writing a blog, I’m actually an introvert. When I’ve started with network marketing, I preferred to die rather approach my friends and family, needless to say, strangers…I thought there must be a better way! After all, the shop owners at the mall do not chase the people at the mall…they wait for them to step into their shop asking to buy something. And that is exactly how to use this book – leave it somewhere publicly to people to see, for example, on your desk at the office. And when your friends will ask you what is it, you can say – “…oh that…I’m reading how can I earn an extra $500 (adjust the number to the audience) a month without leaving my current job, want to check it out over the weekend?”
In either of the cases above, if the book will not convince them to investigate network marketing further, the chances that you’ll be able to do so are slim…
Special chapter I recommend – how to choose a company
If you read this post up to here – congrats! And thank you 🙂
Its mean that you are either seriously looking into network marketing or already in network marketing but lacking the achievements that you would like to have and looking for an answer.
In both cases, I suggest that you’ll read chapter 10 in the book – “what to look for in a network marketing company”
There is a say that your first network marketing chose you. Usually, you get into network marketing because someone approached you and offer you to join him/her on their company. That might be not so good company or might be a great company but…one that doesn’t fit you. Like there are a lot of great cars, clothes, restaurants, etc. But not all are good and not all the good ones fit your needs, wants and values.
Hence, you might want to take a look at chapter 10 to learn how to evaluate a network company and decide if the company is legit and if she meets your values and needs. Here is a sneak preview of what is it about:
- The product
- The company
- Your upline
- Your values
As for the details, you will need to read the book. 🙂

waoooo, it’s such a great book. To teach on network marketing…..
The truth was what you said in the opening sentence, work for 40hours a week for 40 years and still depend on 40% of what was never enough after retirement, what a shame. Anyway for me I’m getting into network marketing and I am optimistic this book will do me great favour so I’m just gonna pick one for myself.
For such a book selling at that given price is to me more like a free gift.
